How to Get a STEM Job Without a University Degree

While many STEM jobs require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree, there are plenty that don’t. Following is some advice on how to get a job in a STEM field even if you don’t have the time or resources to study at university for several years.

Become Computer-savvy

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that about 70% of all STEM job occupations are computer related. What is more, employment in this sector is set to increase by 12.5%, which means that up to half a million new computer-related STEM jobs will be created by the year 2024.

Study as Much as You Can

It is almost impossible to get into a STEM field with nothing more than a high school diploma. Take pertinent classes at a community college or technical school or get an associate’s degree if you are able to. You can also study online for a fraction of what it would cost to attend a regular college or university.

Look for Internship Opportunities

Look for internship opportunities that have the potential to lead to full-time employment. Job experience will not only teach you valuable skills but also look good on your resume even if the company that gives you the internship doesn’t hire you when your internship is over.

Know Where to Look

Some states have more STEM-related job opportunities than others. Some good states to look for a STEM-related job include California, Texas, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Michigan.

Don’t let the lack of a university degree hold you back from getting a job in a STEM-related field. You may not be able to get the exact job you want; however, it is likely you’ll find similar work that doesn’t require a graduate degree. You can then make progress learning about the career your love and in time even earn a degree that will help expand your job opportunities.
