What Does It Mean When an Interviewer Tells You They Have Other Interviews?
One of the most disturbing comments interviewers make to prospective employees is, "I have a ton of other interviews to do." It can be disheartening to hear that when you have a strong interest in a position. However, it could mean a few different things. These are three things the interviewer might be trying to tell you:
He has a ton of other interviews to do
Sometimes, people mean what they say and say what they mean. It's not uncommon for an interviewer to say what's on his mind without realizing how the interviewee might interpret it. Perhaps he's been burdened with the task of talking to many people, and he isn't permitted to hire anyone on the spot.
He's not that into you
Unfortunately, some interviewees have no tact and have no problems being sharp and letting a prospective employee know he or she didn't make the cut. You can usually tell by the other person's tone if his words are from being overworked or disinterested in you as an employee.
The only thing you can do in that situation is continue to send your resume out and refuse to be hard on yourself over the lost opportunity. You might end up getting an opportunity to work for the provider anyway, however. There's a slight chance the interviewer had a strange personality, and you misunderstood his tone. Wait by the phone to see if you were right or wrong.
He is into you but doesn't want you to think so
Some interviewers play their sessions from an angle of feigned disinterest. It makes some workers want the job more because they present a challenge. It's similar to romantic partners pretending not to care about their mates. The good news is that you'll most likely get the job. The bad news is that you might be in store for similar head games once you start.
The moral of the story is not to assume the worst if your interviewer tells you how many other people he has to see. It's never over until you receive a rejection communication, and until then, you're still in the running.Job Search Tips
